PHUKET: AirAsia is conducting another big sales promotion this month, offering more destinations, including Phuket, at even lower fares than their previous sale last August. Phuket is one of AirAsia’s nine regional hubs that connect to an extensive network of about 130 routes covering more than 70 destinations.

The sale is concentrated into a very narrow booking period – from yesterday until this Sunday, March 7, only – but provides for travel from September 25, 2010 through February 13, 2011, the latter three months of which include Phuket’s high season.

THAI police are investigating the death of an Australian flight attendant found outside a hotel in Phuket.

Thai police last night said the body of the man, who worked for V Australia, had been discovered outside the Hilton Hotel at 3.30am yesterday.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman confirmed consular officials were working with Thai authorities investigating the death of a 24-year-old South Australian man. V Australia released a statement saying the death was an accident.

“It is with the deepest sorrow that we confirm the loss of one our team members in accidental circumstances whilst off duty in Phuket yesterday evening,” it said. “We have no further comment to make as our priority at this time is to protect the privacy and offer our support to our crew member’s family at this very sad time.”

The ‘Phuket No Shopping Bag’ project was officially launched on Sunday, but a controversial plan by island retailers to begin charging for plastic bags is apparently on hold.

The launch ceremony, which included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), was held at 4:30pm at Central Festival Phuket.

The ceremony was presided over by Energy Minister Wannarat Channukul. Also attending were a number of high-ranking Energy Ministry officials and local politicians including senators Thanyarat Achariyachai and Phummisak Hongsyok, Phuket MP Rewat Areerob, Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop and Phuket Energy Office Director Jirasuk Tummawetch.

About 1,000 people also turned up for the event, which was the highlight of a three-day public awareness campaign aimed at reducing the use of plastic bags and promoting other ‘green’ initiatives, such as recycling and the development of renewable energy technologies. …click here to read more
