It’s the age-old conundrum. Phuket is Thailand’s most popular island destination, but it’s a large island with a huge amount of choice when it comes to where to visit. The variety in the Phuket beaches on offer is startling. You have everything from developed tourist Meccas to isolated beach spots. So which do you choose?
High on the list of many tourists’ agendas is Patong. This is the Phuket beach that almost everyone knows about. It’s where the majority of the island’s hotels and villas are, and it’s the centre of Phuket’s nightlife scene.
The actual beach part in Patong is a bit of a let-down. It’s crowded and dirty and isn’t like the travel brochures you may have seen. What Patong does have going for it is that it’s the Phuket beach with the most action. There are so many bars and discos with cheap beer and all-night parties that you can’t help but end up drunk and falling asleep to the sound of lapping waves.
Patong is also the Phuket beach with some of the best shopping on the island. Junceylon mall is the place to go for labels and electronics, while the numerous market stalls will be all too happy to sell you DVDs, cheap T-shirts and beach gear.
Patong isn’t to everyone’s liking, however. One Phuket beach that doesn’t get nearly as much attention is Nai Harn. Nai Harn is a peaceful spot that most tourists don’t seem to find during their stays. Just round the corer from Nai Harn there’s an even prettier spot called Ao Sane, which is a tiny pebble beach with a decent restaurant as well.
With all this talk of beaches you may be wondering where the beach parties are. They’re not in Patong, that’s for sure. The island’s only regular beach party happens on Sundays during high season at Laem Singh Beach. Soundwave Sundays has secured its reputation as one of the best shindigs in town.
If you want to go surfing, the best Phuket beach to head to is Kata. The surf really picks up during low season and there are boards and tuition available, so even if you’ve never surfed before, you’ll be able to catch a few waves.
Most people instinctively choose to stay at and visit only the most popular Phuket beaches. This is a mistake because the most frequented beaches are certainly not the best, especially if you’re planning on a quiet getaway enjoying the scenery.
